The Veterinary Assistant is the most important person of the animal care team. Large Animal Veterinary Assistants participate in routine health exams, procedures, and minor surgeries. They may help with safely restraining large animals during exams. Assistants may lead and handle large animals for lameness tests, administer medications, topically or by injection, bandage wounds, prepare surgical sites, collect samples for laboratory tests, and maintain clinical observations. This course is designed to give students the general knowledge to assist large animal veterinarians in the field, clinic or research setting. Topics will include breeds of horses and cattle, anatomy & physiology, herd health, drug classification, dosing and more with some hands on experience included.
