Renovated TCL Hampton Campus officially reopens

The Technical College of the Lowcountry held the grand reopening of the Hampton Campus at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 10 at the H. Mungin Center in Varnville.

“We are here today to witness a commitment to education in Hampton County, that began about 40 years ago,” TCL President Dr. Thomas Leitzel said. “The vision and hope of Mr. Halbert Mungin, a former TCL Commissioner and the namesake of this facility, takes a huge step forward today by providing new skills training opportunities for individuals who will acquire the workforce capabilities needed by our talented economic development professionals to lure the type of firms that will see the benefits of bringing their investment to Hampton County.  The end result is new, primary job growth and development.  TCL is pleased to provide a pivotal role.”

The $1.2 million renovation project features a new façade and showcases new windows, HVAC system, electrical system, bathrooms, and flooring. The building interior has been reconfigured to accommodate new programs in areas such as welding and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tool technology. In addition, there is upgraded equipment and increased capacity for programs in networking technology, certified nursing assistant, EMT, early childhood education and more. Plus, students will be able to take advantage of TCL’s transfer programs by attending their first two years of college at the Hampton Campus.

Hampton county resident Dr. William Small Jr., vice chair of the TCL Area Commission, encouraged the Hampton community to fully utilize the facility.

“We have delivered the product; the challenge now is to operationalize the product,” he said. “I can’t think of a single facility in Hampton County that is better positioned to moving Hampton County forward, the challenge now is to make this building a living, breathing thing.”

Hugh Gray, Hampton County Council Chairman; Bonnie Ammons, Assistant Director Grants Division – Federal Grant Programs, S.C. Department of Commerce; and Major General Abe Turner, Executive Director, S.C. Department of Employment & Workforce Development, also delivered remarks. Tours of the facility followed the ceremony.

The renovation was funded by TCL, Hampton County, and by grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce – Economic Development Administration and the S.C. Department of Commerce – Community Development Block Grant program.

The Hampton Campus, one of five teaching locations for TCL, has been in continuous operation since its opening in 1974. The campus was named the H. Mungin Center in 1991 in honor of Halbert Mungin, who served as Hampton County’s representative on the TCL Commission from 1987 until 1990. The 16,000 square-foot facility is in Varnville on 15 acres between Wade Hampton High School and the county airport.
