TCL to offer continuing education, life enrichment classes at New River Campus

The Technical College of the Lowcountry has scheduled several continuing education and life enrichment courses to be held at its New River Campus, 100 Community College Drive, Bluffton. Classes include rug hooking, couponing, social media for businesses, and veterinary assistant. To register or for more information on any of these courses, please call 843.525.8205.

 


Rug Hooking

 

Rug Hooking will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, October 20 through November 3 at the TCL New River Campus in Bluffton. This hands-on, introductory class will allow participants to complete a small piece over the three sessions. Students will be working with cut wool fabric.  Cost is $65, plus an additional $25 paid to the instructor for materials.

 

When rug hooking developed in New England and Maritime Canada in the early 1800s, it was a craft of poverty to make rugs for bare floors. Rags and scraps were pulled through burlap forming looped pile. In the 1940s rug hooking was rediscovered and raised from hooking primitive designs to tapestry like pieces. Presently, the technique of rug hooking is used in folk art and fine fiber arts.

 

Required Materials:

  • 14-inch quilting hoop or rug hooking frame (students must bring)
  • Scissors (students must bring)
  • Kit purchased from instructor ($25)

 

About the instructor: Debra Walland

Debra Walland is a fiber artist, residing on Hilton Head Island, S.C. She has designed rug patterns since 2007 and has shown pieces in shows in Vermont, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida. She is an exhibiting artist with the Hilton Head Art League and a member of the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists. Her rugs and patterns can be seen at www.rughookseaside.com.

 


Couponing and Saving Money

 

Saving money is a hot topic in today’s economy. You can save hundreds of dollars or more per year just by using coupons. So doesn’t it just make sense to jump aboard?

 

TCL will offer a couponing class from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, November 3, at the New River Campus in Bluffton. Cost is $49.

 

This course will teach couponing basics, budgeting, and cutting corners to give you the ability to coupon wisely and save money.

 


Social Media for Your Business

 

“Social Media for Your Business” will teach business owners and others how to use the major new tools in social media and to focus on best use and efficient use. The class will be held from 6-9 p.m., Mondays, November 8 and 15 at the New River Campus. Cost is $99.

 

Students will learn how to use social media to reach more targeted customers, to leverage search engine optimization, and to ultimately grow their business. Course objectives include:

  • Learn how to use media tools to attract more visitors to sites.
  • Learn about the different sites (Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Google Plus & Places, LinkedIn, BlogSpot, etc.)
  • Create, optimize and promote business profiles
  • Create a basic web page
  • Learn how to use social media to expand your professional network

 


Veterinary Assistant

 

TCL’s Division of Continuing Education will offer a veterinary assistant course at the New River Campus in Bluffton. The 36-hour certification course will be held from 3 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays, January 15 through April 2, 2013. Cost is $619.

 

As the number of veterinarians grows to meet the demand for veterinary care, so will the number of veterinary technicians needed to assist them. The opportunities for employment as a veterinary technician are projected to grow faster than average through 2018.

 

Veterinary assistants perform a wide variety of clinical and technical tasks.  New technologies are revolutionizing the field of veterinary medicine and veterinary assistants will play vital roles in the continued care and medical treatment of animals.

 

Upon completion of the program, participants will have the knowledge necessary to qualify for an entry-level position as a veterinary assistant.
