TCL to offer EPA-certified training for Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting

Posted by & filed under .

The Technical College of the Lowcountry is partnering with Greenville Technical College – one of the first nine Environmental Protection Agency approved training providers in the nation – to offer a Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting course. The RRP course will be held Thursday, March 10 from 8:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. on TCL’s Beaufort campus, building 22, room 100. Cost is $285 per person.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency issued a Renovation, Repair and Paint (RRP) rule in 2008 requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning.

Under the rule, beginning April 22, 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Thus, contractors and workers must follow lead-safe work practice standards to reduce potential exposure to dangerous levels of lead during renovation and repair activities. This requirement applies to anyone who could potentially expose children to lead dust during their work and includes builders, painters, plumbers and electricians. All firms not certified are subject to penalties for failing to comply with the renovation firm requirements of the RRP rule.

Individuals who complete the training on March 10 will receive RRP certification that is applicable for work transpiring in South Carolina, North Carolina and several other states. In addition, participants will receive a hard-copy certificate of completion of the RRP training accompanied by an EPA certification card with photo identification.
