DESCRIPTION:The Mather School Museum & Interpretive Center proudly presents “She Speaks: Echoes of Strength and Resilience\,” a powerful new exhibit featuring artist Amiri Farris and celebrating the enduring influence and cultural contributions of African-American women. \n \nAbout the Exhibit \nSet within the historic walls of the Mather School — an institution founded to educate formerly enslaved girls and women — “She Speaks” pays tribute to the generations of Black women who have shaped history as educators\, activists\, mothers\, artists and spiritual leaders. Through contemporary paintings\, mixed media works and photography\, this evocative exhibition highlights their resilience\, wisdom and artistic expressions. \nThe featured artists\, all with deep connections to the Lowcountry and beyond\, use their work to amplify voices that have long been foundational to the region’s cultural and historical identity. Their pieces reflect the strength\, beauty and perseverance of Black women throughout time. \nA Historic Venue for a Powerful Narrative \nThe Mather School Museum & Interpretive Center is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Rachel Crane Mather\, who established the school in 1868 to educate freed African-American women.
