Explore creativity through these upcoming TCL classes

The Technical College of the Lowcountry Division of Continuing Education is offering a variety of classes in April that allow participants to discover and explore their creativity.


Cake Decorating, the Essentials

Take a one-day class and learn the essential skills to decorate cakes and cupcakes. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 14 at the TCL Beaufort Campus. Students will make their own icing, learn how to properly handle their icing bag, learn about basic bag icing tips and their uses, and learn to make the most popular flowers. Cost is $79.


Local Cuisine Cooking

TCL and Hilton Head Health Culinary Arts Center present Local Cuisine 103 on Saturday, April 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Living in the Lowcountry provides a bounty of fresh, seasonal goods at your fingertips.  Take this spring class and learn how to properly shell and devein local shrimp as well as use the soft-shell crab in a healthy new way.  Students will also work with the fresh produce such as asparagus, peas, spring onions and more – and learn how to get the most from local farmers markets. Sample recipe selections include Grilled Soft Shell Crab over Asparagus, Spring Vegetable Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette, and Marinated-Grilled Shrimp Tacos. Cost is $95 and will be held at Hilton Head Health at  14 Valencia Road.


Memoir Writing

The Technical College of the Lowcountry Continuing Education division will offer a six-week memoir writing class on Mondays, April 16 through May 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Beaufort Campus, 921 Ribaut Road. The class will allow you to recount and record those tales you’ve been telling your family, children and grandchildren for years. Whether you choose to write about a specific experience or cover a number of years, you’ll learn the skills necessary to organize and craft a written legacy for yourself, your family or for publication. The class will be taught by Katherine Tandy Brown, who has been a successful freelance writer for 20 years and has led a wide variety of writing workshops on freelance, travel, memoir and peaceful life writing (based on meditation and recollection).  She is also a Coaches Training International writing coach. Cost is $110.


Creative Organization for Writers

TCL welcomes local writer, Stephanie Edwards who has joined Continuing Education to get writers organized! The class will be held Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m. to noon at the Beaufort Campus. This is a course for writers in how to get organized, to be more productive, and stick with and enjoy the writing process.   Each student should have a basic knowledge of computers and the word processing program they use. Students will learn:

  • Learn the elements of organization for writers.
  • Focus on goals, setting, and scheduling.
  • Understand formatting, story lengths, genres, and computer shortcuts.
  • Tips and sources online and off.

Cost is $59.
