A gift of scholarship is powerful. A scholarship gift elevates a student. It validates their choice and encourages them to keep working towards their goal. At TCL scholarships recognize financial need and merit in equal measure and, reward a commitment to good performance. A student scholarship recipient has the opportunity to retain the scholarship for the entirety of their academic program.

Early Childhood Development
Student Award
The Technical College of the Lowcountry introduces Ms. Angela Jackson, the first recipient of the Frieda R. Mitchell Early Childhood Development Student Award.
Ms. Jackson exemplifies Mrs. Mitchell’s vision for supporting students with a commitment to early education and child development. Angela is a first-year student pursuing an Associate in Applied Science-Early Care and Education degree, and she dedicates her time outside of the classroom to Beaufort County Parks and Recreation and the Early Childhood Program’s Community Lending Library.
The family of Mrs. Frieda R. Mitchell established the Frieda R. Mitchell Early Childhood Development Student Award Endowed Fund at the Technical College of the Lowcountry in 2021. The fund will be a permanent tribute to Mrs. Mitchell.
Mrs. Mitchell was a tireless social justice activist and a champion for children and families. A graduate of the Mather School, she founded the Beaufort County Education Committee, the central force for school desegregation. In 1968, Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Agnes Sherman were the first African Americans elected to a school board in South Carolina.
The Frieda R. Mitchell Early Childhood Development Student Award will be a lasting legacy. The Mitchell Award recognizes students enrolled in the Early Care and Education Program who are engaged in community service and demonstrate a commitment to early childhood education. Her name and example will forever advocate for well children and communities.
