Generic Nursing Application Checklist and Score Sheet

Use this page to review application checklist items, admission pathway requirements, program acknowledgements, and weighted admission score information for the Generic Nursing program at TCL. Applicants should review all requirements carefully and meet with a Health Sciences advisor before applying.

Application Checklist

Before applying, applicants should confirm the following:

  • My official TCL admission application is on file. It is necessary to reapply if I have not attended classes at TCL for more than one year.
  • Official transcripts from high school or GED and all previously attended colleges have been received by TCL. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up with Student Records regarding transfer credit.
  • I am eligible to take MAT 120 and BIO 210, which are required prior to application to the program.
  • Biophysical science course credits and mathematics course credits were completed within five years of application.
  • I met with my Health Sciences Advisor within 6 months of application submission.
  • I have a letter of employment verification of 6 months or more in a healthcare setting, if applicable.
  • If I am a prior TCL nursing student, I have waited a minimum of two academic years from the time of second failure to reapply.
  • Applicants with 2 or more Nursing and Health Science program attempts, including withdrawal and/or failure, within the past 5 years are ineligible to apply.

Application Requirements

Pathway 1

For students who do not need increased requirements under Pathway 2 or Pathway 3.

Requirements:

  • Achieve 3000 score of 1300 or higher
  • TEAS adjusted individual total score of 66 or higher
  • TEAS must be taken at the TCL Testing Center
  • Technical GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Institutional GPA of 2.25 or higher from the last college where 12 or more semester hours were completed

Technical GPA is calculated using the highest grades earned within the last five years for:

  • MAT 120
  • BIO 210
  • BIO 211
  • BIO 225

Pathway 2

Required for applicants with failures (D, F, or WF) within the last three years in two or more required general education courses.

Requirements:

  • Achieve 3000 score of 1300 or higher
  • TEAS adjusted individual total score of 69 or higher
  • TEAS must be taken at the TCL Testing Center
  • Technical GPA of 3.00
  • Completion of all required non-nursing courses in the program of study
  • Institutional GPA of 2.25 or higher from the last college where 12 or more semester hours were completed

Required non-nursing courses:

  • BIO 210
  • BIO 211
  • BIO 225
  • ENG 101
  • ENG 102
  • MAT 120
  • PSY 201
  • PSY 203
  • Approved humanities course, 3 credit hours

Note: MAT and BIO courses must have been completed within the last five years.

Important note: This requirement applies to students with a D, F, or WF in two or more different required general education courses. If a student has 2 or more failures in the same required general education course, the student must have a passing grade in that course prior to application.

Pathway 3

Required for applicants with two or more failures (D, F, W, WE, WP, or WF) in Nursing courses within the last five years. Students only have one opportunity for re-admission.

Requirements:

  • Achieve 3000 score of 1300 or higher
  • TEAS adjusted individual total score of 73 or higher
  • TEAS must be taken at the TCL Testing Center
  • Technical GPA of 3.00
  • Completion of all required non-nursing courses in the program of study
  • Institutional GPA of 2.25 or higher from the last college where 12 or more semester hours were completed
  • If a prior TCL nursing student, applicant must have waited a minimum of two academic years from the time of second failure to reapply

Acknowledgements

If accepted into the program, students must understand the following:

  • A TCL GPA of at least 2.25 must be maintained to remain in the program.
  • Students must attend the entire mandatory orientation and all required activities stated in the acceptance letter.
  • Students must have access to a computer, webcam, microphone, and internet, as all nursing courses include an online component.
  • Clinical rotations may occur at sites within a 60-mile radius of the Beaufort campus and may include weekend and evening rotations. Clinical placement cannot be customized to student preference.
  • Students must be eligible and able to attend all clinical sites used by the Nursing program. Clinical clearances are determined by the clinical facilities, not TCL.
  • Students will be required to provide updated health information and complete clinical information for various agencies at admission and throughout the program.
  • Students will be required to attend Nursing classes at the Beaufort campus, since not all Nursing classes are offered at the New River campus.
  • Students will be required to complete a drug screen and background check. Anyone with concerns about possible background check results must schedule a meeting with the Dean of Health Sciences upon receiving the acceptance letter.
  • Students will be required to provide documentation of valid health insurance for the duration of the program.
  • Students must maintain valid AHA BLS certification for the duration of the program.
  • Program requirements are subject to change without notice to meet requirements of the South Carolina LLR Board of Nursing, the South Carolina Technical College System, and ACEN.
  • The ability to receive licensure by NCLEX examination may be contingent upon United States citizenship.

Weighted Admission Score Information

General Requirements

  • Applicants must meet with a Health Sciences advisor within 6 months prior to application.
  • Preference is given first to residents of Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties.
  • Second preference is given to residents of other South Carolina counties, including Chatham and Effingham.
  • Final preference is given to applicants from other states.
  • Preference is given to students who have not been admitted to the Nursing Program.
  • Students applying for LPN-to-ADN entry must meet separate criteria and should meet with a Health Sciences advisor.
  • LPN has only a spring application period for a fall start only.

TEAS Test Information

  • TEAS scores are valid for 3 years prior to application.
  • The TEAS may be taken only three times within a 12-month period from the date of the first test.
  • Only the highest score will be considered.
  • All TEAS results must be included, not only those taken within the past 12 months.

  • 3.750–3.999 = 8
  • 3.500–3.749 = 6
  • 3.250–3.499 = 4
  • 3.000–3.249 = 2
  • 2.750–2.999 = 1

Additional employment points:

  • Verified full-time employment of 6 months or more in a healthcare setting within the last 3 years may earn 3 additional points.
  • Applicants must upload an employer’s letter to the application.
