What is counseling and how does it work?
Counseling, or talking to a professional such as TCL’s Campus Counselor, can help you to define your personal goals, increase coping skills, improve problem solving skills, lessen negative symptoms like depression or anxiety, and more.
At the Wellness Center we believe everyone can learn and benefit from new patterns of thinking, reverse negative thinking patterns and begin to behave in new ways that are more successful and beneficial to us.
I'm nervous about talking about my problem. How do I know what I say will be kept confidential?
All information, including discussion, is kept strictly confidential between you and your counselor. As a wellness provider, the Wellness Center makes, maintains and utilizes treatment records for treatment purposes. Records are housed separately from a student’s academic files and student records are kept confidential in compliance with state and federal laws, including FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
Student may sign a waiver to release those records.
Are there any fees for this service or does it cost anything?
Counseling services are free to all eligible TCL students. All you have to do is call or email to schedule an appointment.
What can a counselor do for me?
Counselors work with you to resolve concerns about your life in and out of the classroom. They can help you explore feelings, thoughts and behaviors and support personal growth while providing guidance in an objective and non-judgmental space. Counselors can also help with such things as time management, overcoming procrastination and getting organized.
How does counseling work? What will I have to do?
A counseling session is typically around 50 minutes and is designed to help you develop coping skills and problem-solving skills to help you reach your goals. During the session we will work together to identify specific goals or areas you wish to change and work toward resolving issues that are keeping you from where you want to be.
