We know that many students want a Social Security number because the numbers are commonly used in the U.S. However, the current rule states that F-1 students may not apply for a Social Security number without a valid reason, and we are sorry about the inconvenience. Should you experience any difficulties without a Social Security number, please let us know and we will try to assist you in the best way possible.

If you have been authorized to work by USCIS or you receive a written job offer for a part-time position on-campus, then you can apply for and receive a Social Security number. If you get permission to work, you will need a Social Security number for your employer.
